Hardwoods

Ash is thought by many to be the best burning hardwood as it provides plenty of heat and also burns a bright green.

Beech is good when it has been well seasoned, it is also better when part seasoned for slow burning.

Birch provides good heat and a bright flame but burns quickly.

Oak is also considerd to be a superior fuel. Very old dry seasoned oak is excellent, burning slowly with a good heat.

Softwood

Softwood is good if you are looking for a fire that is very easy to start.

Due to the high pitch content, most softwoods (conifers: pine, fir, cedar, etc.) tend to pop and "crackle".

Softwoods burn at a lower temperature than hardwoods. This means that more unburned materials (in the form of smoke) go up the chimney and stick to the sides of it.

Mix softwoods with hardwoods to keep a fire going if the hardwoods aren't fully seasoned.
